Our June Hero of the Month is Chloe. She is an adorable 3 year old who likes barbies, beads and loves to paint but she also has a wonderful outlook on life despite all she has endured. Chloe suddenly became sick at home in Okanogan and came to Sacred Heart Children's Hospital where she was diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome.

Duncan was diagnosed at just 15 months with a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer, hepatoblastoma. Duncan's parents deepest fears were realized when they learned the cancer had already advanced to stage IV and had metastasized to his lungs. From the moment they heard the doctor speak those painful words their lives were redefined.

Seven year old Hali was playing hard when she collapsed. Her mom was concerned, but when it happened several more times, she was frightened. She sought medical help from the emergency department at the local central Washington hospital and even made a trip to Seattle for CT scans, without finding answer.

Jace is a happy 11 year old boy despite the fact that he was born with a condition called Ecto Dermal Dysplasia, a genetic disorder in which the body cannot cool itself off. This restricts his ability to play any sports, such as soccer or basketball, with his friends. The one sport he found that he could do however, was water sports.

Our Hero of the Month for July is Jacob. He came to Sacred Heart Children's Hospital for the first time in May after a fall, resulting in a spiral fracture of his femur. His first stay with us he had a spica cast placed and went home after a week. When the bone did not heal he returned to the hospital and had his leg put in traction.

Jessy Smith had been pregnant for 20 weeks when she began losing amniotic fluid. That night, doctors told her she would likely deliver within 48 hours and that they would not be able resuscitate the baby. But baby Kaitlyn had other plans. She turned head down in her mother’s womb, stopping the loss of amniotic fluid.

“Baby Margarita” was born in the small agricultural community of La Papalota, El Salvador. Shortly after her birth a local doctor diagnosed little Margarita with a congenital heart defect that was beyond his expertise to repair. Her only hope would be the generosity of specialists in a far away country.
